Growing Up Through Sports (GUTS) is a Not For Profit Corporation that uses 100% of all donated funds to support a variety of charitable causes in the communities across Ontario, with a principal objective of assisting economically disadvantaged youth in playing the great sport of ball hockey.
GUTS originated in Barrie in 2011, with its first initiative being the Summer Hockey Camp held at the Barrie Ball Hockey Club. It is expanding into the Niagara and Brampton areas this year as we develop the support of volunteers and get others involved in its mission. Too many organizations today spend too much money on administration and fundraising; GUTS is about giving back to the community through collective efforts with no overhead costs.
We expect to support over 50 kids in Barrie, 40 in Brampton and another 50 in St. Catharines this year by providing funding to be used towards registration in our summer camps or in leagues at affiliated clubs. Over $20,000 was raised and donated to assist children in Barrie and support the RVH in Barrie and The United Way in St. Catharines in 2011.
Unfortunately, there are so many families today who lack the financial means to give their child the chance to grow up through sports; GUTS seeks to change this reality because, whether they encourage a healthy active lifestyle, foster friendships, or educate youth in teamwork, commitment, discipline and physical fitness, sports canbenefit a child on so many levels.
